                                                                  Advocacy Opportunities in the Community
We received word today that the Ohio House Committee on State Government and Elections plans to pass a new voter ID law requiring a photo identification to cast an in person ballot. The bill only allows voters to use an Ohio driver's license, Ohio state ID card, U.S. passport, or U.S. military ID for identification. The bill, H.B. 159, was introduced last Tuesday as Gov. Kasich's budget was announced, and there has been no opportunity for public input.

The right to vote is foundational for our democracy and such a law will undoubtedly disenfranchise many poor and working class Ohioans, the elderly, people of color, and students.

I ask that you please read the ACLU's Action Alert on this bill, and forward it to your networks. We are urging people to call the chairperson of the committee and request they delay a vote until all questions on cost and fairness are addressed.
